  • RAMSGATE OPERATIC SOCIETY

ABOUT US Learn More Welcome to Ramsgate Operatic Society. We are very pleased that you have found our site. The Society was founded in 1961 and we are based in Ramsgate in Thanet Kent. For most of the year, the members of the society meet every Thursday evening at St Ethelberts Church Hall, Hereson Road, Ramsgate, at 7.30. p.m. Our aim is to produce top class musical theatre, and we usually manage to perform two shows each year usually taking place in May and November. If you enjoy singing and acting, and want to join a great group of likeminded people, please come and join us. We are a very friendly crowd with a diverse age range, and you will be warmly received by one and all. We would also love to hear from anyone who would like to join he society but would prefer to work 'backstage' or 'front of house' We will always encourage and support new members and have been widely described by members as being their "extended family". We are also a registered charity whose aims are to increase public education in operatic and dramatic arts and to support other charities and good causes. The Society is run by a committee of trustees, elected each year by the members of the society (click on icon for more information) Early beginnings of the society "On 29th September 1960, a group of teachers from different schools in Thanet, mainly Chatham House, Clarendon House and Dane Court, met in the Old Library at Clarendon House, to discuss the possibility of forming a society with the object of producing Gilbert and Sullivan operas. The company reassembled every October to rehearse on Thursday evenings, excluding school holidays, until the following May, when the shows were presented at the Granville Theatre, Ramsgate. The first production, in May 1961, was the ever-popular Mikado. Then in 1969, for the first time, the Society departed from Gilbert and Sullivan to present Edward German’s Merrie England Following a very successful production of Offenbach’s La Vie Parisienne in 1972, it was decided that two productions would be presented a year; one of these would be a Gilbert and Sullivan opera. Since that time a wide variety of shows have been offered, including operettas, musical comedies, musicals and revues." Extract taken from an article written by Sylvia Blogg (1927 - 2016 ) Former President of ROS
